Quota for Boys!!!

We have heard about quota for SC/St/OBC/military personel/descendants of freedom fighters/handicapped/girls.
For the first time in India there has been a proposal for a quota for Boys. This proposal was made by St Stephen College Delhi Principal Valson Thamu on the ground that there are too many girls students in this prestigious college almost two third (65 percent) while boys are only one third(35 percent). So he proposed a quota of 40 percent for boys.

However this proposal couldnot be implemented because of resistance by female teachers as well as left wing intellegensia.Whole of the media condenmned the proposal. So ultimately this proposal was withdrawn and the matter has gone in cold storage.

However before condenmning this proposal one should know a little about facts. At one time prestigious Lady Shriram College was exclusively for girls while equally prestigious St Stephens College was only for boys.In 1975 St Stephen College in Delhi was opened for girls while doors of Lady Shriram College remained closed for boys and they are closed for boys till this date. When doors of St Stephen College were initially opened for girls it was understood that at least seventy five percent seats will be for boys only as girls had Lady Shriram exclusively. But this was soon forgotten.Apart from Lady Shriram there are 14 other colleges exclusively for girls.Total 15 out of sixty. There are no colleges solely for boys--remaining are CoEd.

Women have been enjoying 35 to 50 percent quota in Panchayat,Municipal bodies,35 percent in professional courses and in most of the state Jobs. After two years women will have quota in LokSabha and state legistative assembalies as well.
Considering above facts there does seem to be a case of discrimation against boys and vehemant reaction of press against boys quota seem unwarranted.Nevertheless poor performance of boys in 12th board should be a cause of concern to our educationalists who seem apathetic at gender gap in colleges.
